Psychotherapy Los Angeles

If you are interested in counseling or support on some level for issues you are going through, you might want to look into your options for psychotherapy. This is a form of counseling or treatment that can be extremely beneficial for the patient to work through feelings and emotions.

What Exactly Does A Psychotherapist Do?

A psychotherapist works on what is known as “talking treatment” that uses talking rather than having the patient use medication. Depending on the form of treatment, the psychotherapist may suggest a few sessions or going longer-term with treatment that could last up to a year. A psychotherapist is a licensed professional with a background in one or more of the following areas: a psychoanalyst, psychiatrist clinical social worker, family therapist, marriage counselor, psychologist, or mental health counselor.

What Are The Main Types Of Psychotherapy?

There are usually five main types of psychotherapy or approaches that a psychotherapist will use. The main examples include:

Behavior Therapy –This is an approach that has to do with the role that learning plays in normal and abnormal behavior development.

Psychoanalysis/Psychodynamic Therapy –This focuses on working to change feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that are problematic by discovering more about motivations and meanings of the unconscious.

Cognitive Therapy –This emphasizes that people are thinking rather than what they are doing.

Humanistic Therapy –This is an approach that takes a look at the ability to make rational choices while developing maximum potential.

Holistic/Integrative Therapy –This is when a psychotherapist blends facets from other approaches to tailor the treatment plan to their client’s unique needs.

What Is The Difference Between Psychotherapy And Counseling?

While there may be some terms that are used interchangeably, counseling and psychotherapy are very different. Counseling is focused on specific problems and works to help someone address their issues with coping tools. Psychotherapy is a more long-term form of counseling that focuses on a broader spectrum of issues. This can include how someone thinks and how their behavior impacts their interactions with the world around them. Depending on the form of psychotherapy that is being used, the goal will be to help the patient feel better while not only managing but also understanding what leads them to the behaviors, to begin with.

What Happens At Psychotherapy?

The way that your visits are structured will be unique to your needs, and it may be different for other patients. The therapist will usually gather information regarding your needs and find out the goal of your treatment. They may use one or more type of psychotherapy, and you can generally expect your sessions to last around 45 to 60 minutes each time. You will be encouraged to discuss your feelings and thoughts on whatever may be troubling you. There might also be tasks or homework that is assigned in between sessions so that you have something to build on.
